American writer, environmentalist and filmmaker Laurence Brahm is to publish a new book series called Searching for China, which will explore the depth of Chinese culture.

Outlining his hopes for the series, Brahm says that he wants to address what he considers the "backward" western reporting on China: "The media coverage about China in the Western world is at least 10 years backward. And the situation needs to be changed.

"I want to introduce Asian values to the world through this series. That means to dissolve misunderstanding and build something new, a new way of seeing the world," he said.

Nie Zhengning, former president of the China Publishing Group Corporation, said at the series launch that more work is required to find and promote good news stories about China.

Dong Qiang, dean of the French Literature Department of Peking University, highlighted the importance of fostering friendship and goodwill during cultural exchange. "In my experience, discovering similarities connects people faster than anything else. We could pay more attention to the Chinese values that are shared around the globe instead of simply stressing upon China's uniqueness," he said.

Feng Minghui, editor of China Culture Website, praised Brahm's understanding of China. "There are many interesting details and personal experiences in Brahm's writings, which would be even better if more Chinese heritages can be explored, such as Chinese martial arts and the Beijing courtyard," she said.

The book series will be included in the Writing on China by Foreigners project. Organized by the Chinese Culture Translation and Studies Support Network, the project was held twice in 2017, attracting 380 overseas institutions and 26 Sinologists and international authors.
