Chinese pop icon Andy Lau couldn't go on singing on Friday night during a concert in Hong Kong due to his worsening laryngitis, having to say a tearful goodbye to the audience after only performing three songs.

It was a nightmare for fans, many of whom had flown into Hong Kong to attend the concert.

"I know many of you have come from other faraway places to see me tonight, I just wanted to hold on, but I tried and failed," Lau said on stage when he stopped singing, "My doctor asks me to stop."

The dramatic abrupt end to the concert left thousands of fans in the Hong Kong Coliseum upset and disappointed. Many fans immediately wept.

"I don't want to finish the concert by a vocal performance like this. I will let you know the compensation later and I apologize to all of you," Lau said amid tears.

The 57-year-old singer bowed to the audiences in four directions and stepped off the stage. Some of fans voiced their opinions to local media that, though disappointed, they wanted to forgive their idol.

"He just wanted to hold on for us. He didn't just send out a cancellation notice or finish the concert by lip-synch; he tried, but failed, " one fan said.

The megastar is well-known for his hard-working style and kindness to fellow entertainers in showbiz.

The canceled concert was the 14th of a 20-show concert tour "My Love Andy Lau World Tour - Hong Kong 2018" being held in the city. The tour was initially scheduled for 2017; however, Lau fell from a horse during the shooting of a commercial and broke his back, from which he only recovered after some months.

The promoter of Lau's concerts quickly announced they had decided to cancel three concerts on Dec. 28, 29 and 30 and would shortly announce a refund arrangement. Whether other remaining concerts will also be affected is not known.
