Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" and Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Favourite" are leading the race for the 91st Academy Awards, with 10 nominations each, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the U.S. announced on Tuesday.

Cuaron's "Roma," the monochromatic drama distributed by Netflix, made history by becoming the first feature film from a streaming platform to earn an Oscar best picture nomination. The film has 10 nominations, including best picture, best director, best actress, best supporting actress, best foreign language film and best cinematography.

The historical period comedy "The Favourite" also earned 10 nominations. 

"Roma" and "The Favourite" will compete for best picture against six other films: "Black Panther," "BlacKkKlansman," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Green Book," "A Star Is Born," and "Vice." Of those, "Black Panther" is the first superhero film ever to get Oscar nomination, marking its historical significance for the African American community in the last year. 

"Green Book," funded in part by China's Alibaba Pictures, was already a big winner at the 76th annual Golden Globes before receiving five Oscar nominations yesterday. If it wins, Alibaba Pictures will become the first Chinese internet film company to have funded an Oscar-winning film. Following the announcement of nominations by the Academy, the Chinese company immediately set March 1 as the release date in China.

The nominees for best animated feature film are "Incredibles 2," "Isle of Dogs," "Mirai," "Ralph Breaks the Internet" and Sony's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," the last of which is considered the front runner as it has earned many accolades during the awards season.

Pixar's short film, the Chinese-centric "Bao," directed by China-born Canadian director Domee Shi, was nominated for best animated short film, alongside "Animal Behavior," "Late Afternoon," "One Small Step" and "Weekends."

The best foreign film competition will see "Roma" (Mexico), "Capernaum" (Lebanon), "Cold War" (Poland), "Never Look Away" (Germany) and "Shoplifters" (Japan) vie against each other.

The 91st Academy Awards ceremony will be held on Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The Oscars also will be televised live on ABC and other networks, as well as online, in more than 225 countries and areas worldwide.
