The Summer Palace released its own line of lipsticks on Thursday, reports Beijing Youth Daily. News of their release spread quickly online, and more than 4,000 of the "Empress Style" lipsticks were sold on Alibaba's marketplace Tmall within 24 hours.

The Summer Palace teamed up with the domestic brand Catkin for its new line of makeup products, which also includes eye shadows and facial masks.

The design of the packaging was inspired by an embroidery screen in the residence of Empress Dowager Cixi at the Summer Palace. The screen, named "A Hundred Birds Paying Respect to the Phoenix", represents a time of national peace. The use of 3D printing technology gives the metal packaging the texture of the original embroidery.

Starting from Thursday, more than 70,000 comments had been made on the topic "Empress lipsticks by the Summer Palace" on Sina Weibo, one of the biggest social media platforms in China.

Some people are calling for the Prince Gong's Mansion - another museum in Beijing - and the museum that's home to the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an to release their own brand of lipsticks.

The Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, released its own line of lipsticks in December that were an instant hit with the public.
