Singer of Iron Maiden group Bruce Dickinson received on Saturday an "Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo" award for a concert performed during Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH's) 1992-1995 war, local media reported.

The award was handed by Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka who said that it took courage for Dickinson to come to Sarajevo in 1994 when Sarajevo was under siege.

Back in 1994, the former lead singer with Iron Maiden and four backing musicians arrived in Sarajevo which was under siege, to provide "something positive for young people in an environment with a lot of negativity".

The ethnically rooted war that took place from 1992 to 1995 in BiH was fought between Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs, resulting in 100,000 people killed and over 2 million displaced worldwide. After years of bitter fighting, Western countries backed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) imposed a final ceasefire negotiated at Dayton, Ohio, the U.S., in 1995.
