Sun Nan, deputy director of the Qin Han New City Management Committee, speaks at the opening of the International Urban Sculpture Biennale of Qin Han New City on May 11, 2019.

The International Urban Sculpture Biennale of Qin Han New City was launched in Venice, Italy on Saturday. The biennial exhibition is aimed at strengthening cultural exchange under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and promoting the prosperity and development of global culture.

Qin Han New City is located near Xianyang and Xi'an, in northwestern China's Shaanxi province. It is home to many ancient ruins, as the latter two cities are the sites of the capital cities of the Qin (221 BCE to 206 BCE) and Han dynasties (206 BCE to 220 AD).

The event aims to further cultural and public arts exchanges between the East and the West, and to promote closer communication of artists and entrepreneurs, said Sun Nan, deputy director of the Qin Han New City Management Committee, at the opening of the show.

Qin Han New City has become one of the most dynamic and most promising investment destinations in Xi'an, as its urban and cultural developments have made rapid changes with the progress of the BRI, Sun said.

Bernar Venet, a French conceptual artist whose work has been exhibited around the world, also attended the opening in Venice.

The biennial exhibition captured the attention of international cultural and art circles, as artists discovered the high demand for art in many Chinese cities, particularly for urban sculptures, during the process of urbanization.

For centuries, the Silk Road has connected the two important representatives of Eastern and Western cultures, China and Italy.
