46 Chinese artists are set to showcase paintings, sculptures, engravings, installations and videos at the renowned Curitiba Biennial of Contemporary Art in Brazil. The news was announced at a press conference in Beijing on June 12. The Curitiba Biennial was conceived in 1990 under the name VentoSul, and has since emerged as one of the main exhibitions of Latin American art, representing some of the most expressive contemporary artists from the region. In addition to displaying contemporary art, the Biennial also showcases cinema, parallel programs and literature exhibitions. The Biennial has grown to be one of the most influential in the world.

The 14th Biennial will be held from Sept. 21, 2019 to Feb. 23, 2020 in the Oscar Niemeyer Museum and the Municipal Art Museum in Curitiba, Brazil. Tereza de Arruda and Adolfo Montejo Navas are the curators of this year and have set "Open Borders" as the theme.

45 works by Chinese artists will be exhibited at the Biennial, including paintings, sculptures, engravings, installations and videos. Chinese artists first participated in the Curitiba Biennial in 2009 and have left deep impressions on Latin American audiences. The artistic communication between Chinese and Latin American artists has had positive effects on both sides.

Lu Zhengyuan, curator of the 2019 China Pavilion, explained the meaning of the theme of the China Pavilion, "Coming Naturally." It aims to show a model of boundaries based on a classical Chinese philosophy which seeks a balance between "boundedness" and "boundlessness," and to form a new understanding of boundaries through the deconstruction and reorganization of traditional art boundaries.

Wang Shaojun, professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, delivered a speech on behalf of Chinese artists who will participate in the Biennial. He said that the Curitiba Biennial gives Chinese artists an opportunity to bring their thoughts to Latin America and to the world.
