Two Shaoxing operas featuring "The Dream of the Red Chamber" and "The Butterfly Lovers" will be staged in Beijing Poly Theatre on Aug. 6-7, it was announced on Monday.

Shaoxing opera, also known as Yue opera, emerged in the early 1900s in east China's Zhejiang Province, which is also popular in neighboring city of Shanghai. Shaoxing operas are invariably romances, without acrobatics or battle scenes.

As one of the classic Shaoxing operas, "The Butterfly Lovers" is based on the folktale of star-crossed lovers Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, and is regarded as the Chinese version of "Romeo and Juliet."

The two operas will be presented by the Shanghai Yue Opera House, which was founded in 1955.
