A children's play adapted from the ancient Chinese fable "Yugong removing mountains" is being staged in Beijing from Tuesday to Wednesday as part of the ninth China Children's Theater Festival.

The fable tells a story about Yugong, literally referring to a foolish old man, who determinedly tried to move mountains blocking the path in front of his home and eventually managed to move the mountains with perseverance.

In the newly produced drama, Yu Xiaoyu, a present-day pupil, accidentally travels back to the age of the fable, helps Yugong with modern knowledge and becomes part of the ancient story.

The play is expected to show children Chinese traditional culture and the outstanding quality of the Chinese nation, according to the production team.

The music features a combination of both traditional and foreign elements, including iconic instruments from the Peking Opera.

During this year's festival, a total of 57 plays from home and abroad will be staged such as "Swan Lake" and "Sleeping Beauty."
