Police: HK actor Simon Yam stabbed by paranoid man

Famous Hong Kong actor Simon Yam underwent successful surgery on Saturday, while local police said he was stabbed by a man with delusional disorder.
According to the police, Yam, 64, was attending the opening ceremony of the EasyHome furnishings store at the Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone in Zhongshan, Guangdong province, at around 10 a.m. and, while being interviewed on stage, the suspect surnamed Chen, 53, rushed up and used a 20.71-centimeter-long knife to stab him.
The suspect was overwhelmed by security guards, who quickly called police officers to come and arrest him for interrogation and investigation.
Shocking videos taken by onlookers of the attack went viral on China's social networks. A video even shows Yam clutching his stomach as he realized he was bleeding.
Police said the suspect confessed to his crime, while a local hospital has evaluated his mental status and found he suffered from paranoiac schizophrenia, which is popularly known as delusional disorder. Further investigations are still underway.
Emperor Entertainment Group, which manages Yam, released a statement that they were shocked about the attack and strongly condemned the attacker. According to the company, the Hong Kong actor suffered a knife wound which slightly penetrated his internal organs as well as suffering wounds to the fingers on his right hand.
Yam successfully underwent surgery and is recovering in a stable condition.
On Saturday night, Yam was released from the local hospital in Zhongshan and transferred to one in Hong Kong for further treatment and rehabilitation.
The company added it wound continue to seek the truth of the violent attack with help of the police, and was ready to sue the individual(s) involved.
EasyHome, which had invited Yam to the opening of its new branch store, also released a statement to apologize to the star and to the public. "We will strengthen security in the future for public events, and prevent things like this from happening again," the statement said, adding the company was fully cooperating with the police investigation.
Simon Yam is a veteran and prolific movie and TV actor and producer. He has received international acclaim for his performances in many domestic and international hits such as "Exiled," "Ip Man," "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life," "Operation Red Sea" and upcoming "Little Q." He won Best Actor for "Echoes of the Rainbow" at the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2010.
