Most Zambian youths are interested in learning Mandarin as a second language to bridge up communication barrier with Chinese investors, a government official said Monday.

The increase in Chinese investment requires local people to communicate in Mandarin to ease communication barriers, said Mary Chibesa, Chingola District Commissioner.

"To bridge the gap in communication especially with Chinese investors who are creating jobs in Zambia, our youths should know how to communicate in Mandarin," she said in an interview with Xinhua.

Chibesa said the flow of Chinese enterprise in Chingola and the country as a whole calls for improved communication.

"Just like Chinese want to do literally what Zambians do and by learning local languages, it is important for locals also to learn Mandarin as a second language," she said.

She said the introduction of Chinese Mandarin curriculum in Zambian schools is a step in the right direction.

"China is working with African nations to bring about development especially in infrastructure development and learning Mandarin is a priority," said Mabvuto Phiri, a local youth entrepreneur.

Youths should take advantage of learning Mandarin if they are to create business linkages with their counterparts in China, he said.
