Basil and Elise Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art is set to open in Athens on Oct. 1, representatives of the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation told a press briefing on Monday.
Greek shipping tycoon Basil Goulandris and his wife Elise built a significant collection of masterpieces of European Avant-Garde artists and Greeks during the 20th century.
Located near the Panathenaic stadium, the marble venue of the first modern Olympics, the new museum is housed in an early 20th-century neoclassical mansion with an 11-story expansion.
"At this moment on display are 180 works of art spreading across four floors. They include sculptures and paintings, as well as objects and furniture," Marie Koutsomallis, Head of Collections at the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, told Xinhua.
"We are very happy that these very important works of art which marked the modern and contemporary art history are here. We would like to see crowds here getting acquainted with significant works," said Kyriakos Koutsomallis, member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation and Director of the Museum of Andros.
