Thousands of participants donned dazzling costumes for the Shanghai Disney Resort's themed race, The Disney Inspiration Run, on Saturday.

Families, friends and fitness fans laced up their sneakers and made their way to the Shanghai Disney Resort for the first day of the 2019 Autumn Disney Inspiration Run. This is the third time the run has been held in the Shanghai resort, which geared up for the upcoming festivities with various Halloween decorations.

Dressed in an array of Disney-inspired costumes, participants were beaming as they began the scenic 3.5km and Kids Run courses.

With nearly 10,000 runners, the starting line was abuzz with excitement as Donald Duck, Mickey and Minnie sounded the horns for participants to take off on their magical morning of fun and fitness.

Along the way, runners were also greeted and cheered on by a whole host of Disney iconic characters. This included infamous Disney villains who were making their debut appearance in the race to coincide with Halloween, posing for pictures in front of the iconic Disney scenery, including the Enchanted Storybook Castle.

In the lead-up to the Disney Inspiration Run, participants were invited to submit photos of their costumes on social media and take part in a new dress-up competition.

At the end of the 3.5km run, a special closing ceremony attended by Donald and Daisy Duck was hosted, celebrating the spirit of sports, fun and healthy living with family and loved ones.

Saturday also marked the return of the popular Kids Run at the Wishing Star Park, where thousands of young runners and their families dressed up for the outdoor race. The Kids Run included a 100 meter dash, where kids were cheered on by Chip 'n' Dale, who appeared in their special Halloween costumes, and were presented with a unique medal after completing the event.

The 2019 Autumn Disney Inspiration Run once again celebrates diversity and inclusivity and by working closely with a local charity NGO, beYoureyeS, the resort welcomed visually impaired participants in the run. A total of 40 visually impaired runners and guides took part in Saturday's 3.5k run and on Sunday, a group of 50 participants with disabilities from the Shanghai Sports Training Center for Disabled Persons including another 10 visually impaired runners and guides took part in the 5km run.

On Sunday, another 10,000 runners took part in the 2019 Autumn Disney Inspiration Run, which also featured a 5km run as well as a second 3.5km run and a 100m Kids Run.

First organized in Orlando in 1994, Disney marathons and road races have attracted hundreds of thousands of participants across the globe and have been held in numerous cities including Paris, Hong Kong, and Orlando and Anaheim in the US. The Shanghai resort launched its first race in 2018, and then held a Spring race in April 2019, attracting about 10,000 participants.
