The week-long festival features colorful events including a themed exhibition on the Great Wall displaying calligraphy, painting and photography artworks as well as a cultural forum on the Badaling Great Wall.

With a theme of "the Great Wall Protection, Ecological Great Wall and Cultural Great Wall," the festival serves as a national platform for the protection of the Great Wall and showcases the time-honored spirit of the Great Wall.

Yanqing is a cluster of well-known scenic spots including the world-renowned Badaling Great Wall, a world cultural heritage site. To better protect the Great Wall, Yanqing released a three-year action plan on the sideline of the festival.

The three-year action plan includes the construction of the Badaling Great Wall Cultural Park, the ancient town of Yongning and the Great Wall Cultural Industrial Park. High technology will be applied in protecting and restoring the Great Wall.

By the year 2022, Yanqing will complete its emergency repair of the key sections of the Great Wall.

"Local people in Yanqing cherish a special feeling towards the Great Wall as they have lived nearby for generations," said Huang Keying, director of the Publicity Department of the Yanqing District Committee of the Communist Party of China. "Many locals have been protecting the Great Wall either as volunteers or professionals, inheriting the undertaking from their older generation."

China issued the Great Wall Protection Ordinance in 2006 and the Chinese government and the public are becoming increasingly concerned with the protection and restoration of the Great Wall.
