"Paysages de l'âme," an exhibition of mixed media paintings by Yang Wenping, a contemporary Chinese artist famous for her attainments in oil painting, water and ink painting, and photography, was launched on Oct. 20 in Beijing's 798 art district.

The exhibition features Yang's paper-based works since 2018. Through virtuoso brush work and fluid lines, Yang expressed her aesthetic interpretations of flowers, butterflies, and birds in mixed media such as frottage, printmaking, and water and ink painting, to name a few.

Speaking on her motivation of turning to mixed media art, Yang told China.org.cn in an interview during the launch ceremony that "At some point in life, it might be fun to step out of my comfort zone since I've been doing oil painting for so many years. And it turns out that, yes, it is fun."

"I guess what I want to tell through my works in the last two years is that I am attempting to make breakthroughs in my 'art language,' not only in the techniques that I use, but also in the emotions that I want to communicate with audiences," Yang shared with China.org.cn.

Dr. Rasko Radovic, a renowned art critic and advisor to the exhibition, highly recognized Yang's paintings during an interview with China.org.cn.

"The animals, cats and birds that inhabit Wenping's paintings, all vividly depicted with a personality peculiar to each, seem to express, in their wide open eyes, an amazement that they have found themselves in this virtual reality which possesses a beautiful glass like transparency and purity and, at the same time, has an elusive quality of a memory of a dream," Dr. Radovic said.

When asked about his interpretation of the colors applied, Dr. Radovic replied that "the distinction warm and cold (colors) here is blurred in a way."

"The quality that impressed me in her painting is the transparency of the color, as well as its delicacy. It reminds me of the 'fencai' (famille rose porcelain) techniques in which Chinese artists of the past employed western colors in a novel, creative way achieving coloristic effects as unusual as they are refined," Dr. Radovic added.

Yves Reymond, head of the Economic, Financial and Commercial Section of the Embassy of Switzerland in China, also attended the launch ceremony. Reymond compared Yang's work with traditional wall paintings, saying that it embodies a sense of nature, and makes him feel like stepping into an ancient castle.

Yang's work will be exhibited in Beijing's 798 art district until Nov. 3.
