The Beijing municipal government will hold the Grand Canal Culture Festival from Nov. 7 to 15, which will include various cultural activities and sporting events to promote high-quality development of the tourism industry in the city.

Wang Jiequn, deputy director of Beijing's publicity department, said at a news conference on Thursday that the festival will integrate the best events, which will attract the public to enjoy the traditions, culture, sports, and scenery of the canal and the city after several months of being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wang also said this will be the first time for Beijing to hold a Grand Canal-themed festival since China issued a plan on the construction of national culture parks for the Grand Canal. The festival is aimed at introducing the cultural heritage and history of the canal through various activities, including concerts, plays, lectures, and photo exhibitions. The event also invites citizens to create videos and capture the beauty of the Grand Canal through their camera lenses.

TV and radio programs will also be broadcast to showcase the water transport management and intangible cultural heritage of the Grand Canal. In addition, citizens will be able to experience the Grand Canal by participating in online activities.

The festival will be beneficial to the development of Beijing's sub-center in Tongzhou district, where most of the canal is located, Wang said.
