Shanghai Disney Resort, on Tuesday, announced the launch of the third Disney Imaginations Shanghai Design Competition, inviting university and college students from a wide range of disciplines to showcase their design prowess, creativity and imagination.

Organized by the resort with participation of the Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai, the annual competition encourages and empowers local talent and encourages students to fully display their creative ideas. 

The winners will be invited to intern at Shanghai Disney Resort, receive a cash award, and undertake a trip to the Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai campus to learn first-hand from some of the best talents in the industry. The second and third place teams will also receive cash awards and the chance to interview for internships at the resort.

The 2021 competition is set to launch with a series of new online roadshows starting Nov. 19. During the roadshows, participants from 10 universities from Shanghai and Zhejiang will be introduced to the new project challenge and the world of Imagineering by representatives from Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai. 

The competing students will be selected from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University, East China Normal University, East China University of Science and Technology, Donghua University, Shanghai University, Shanghai Theatre Academy, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts and China Academy of Art.

Successful applicants will then form interdisciplinary teams to deliver a concept for fictional and hypothetical guest experiences, echoing the way Walt Disney Imagineers design "immersive" and "fantastical" experiences for Disney parks across the globe, according to the press release. 

Teams can register via the Disney Imaginations Shanghai website starting Nov. 19, and submit their entries in the period from Dec. 11, 2020 through Jan. 25, 2021. All submitted entries will be evaluated and finalists announced in March 2021. The finalists will present their designs to a panel of experienced judges. Their designs can use any materials they wish to enhance their presentation, including mock-ups, 3D plans, videos and more.

Disney Imaginations Shanghai was launched by Shanghai Disney Resort in 2018, with the purpose of seeking out and nurturing the next generation of diverse Imagineers. The competition was inspired by the Disney Imaginations Design Competition, designed, created and sponsored by Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) in the United States in 1991. 

Since its inception, Disney Imaginations Shanghai has attracted hundreds of university students to participate in the competition, and many of the finalists from the previous two events have been offered internships at Shanghai Disney Resort, many even going on to obtain full-time employment.
