More than one month after its release on Dec. 24, domestic action thriller "Shock Wave 2" has maintained momentum at China's box office ahead of the market's competitive Spring Festival holiday movie-going season.

The sequel to the 2017 hit "Shock Wave" saw its total earnings top 1.2 billion yuan (185 million U.S. dollars) on Sunday, according to figures compiled by the China Movie Data Information Network.

"Shock Wave 2" became the latest movie to rake in box office takings at this level in China following the heart-warming domestic film "A Little Red Flower," which has grossed more than 1.3 billion yuan since its release on New Year's Eve.

Both films have continued outstanding performance in the market, securing their places among the daily top-three earners and outshining many new titles.

Saturday saw "Shock Wave 2" rake in nearly 16 million yuan, accounting for about one fifth of the market's daily total earnings, while "A Little Red Flower" made more than 13 million yuan.

China's 2020 box office total was 20.4 billion yuan, with all of the top 10 earners being domestic productions, according to official figures.
