A public art exhibition featuring works of university professors and students from the China Academy of Art and Bulgaria's National Academy of Art opened on Friday.

The month-long event, titled "Light Beyond the City", is the first public art exhibition related to the concept of lanterns and lighting in Bulgaria.

It is staged at the Slaveykov square, a popular place in the center of Bulgaria's capital city, featuring 18 pieces of artwork.

The Chinese Embassy in Bulgaria is the initiator and coordinator of the exhibition, which is organized by the China Cultural Center in Sofia and Sofia Municipality, and co-organized by the two art academies.

"We wanted to organize something nice and interesting during the Chinese traditional holiday in Bulgaria," said Guan Xin, the cultural counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Sofia.

The exhibition is held outdoors due to the pandemic. "Besides, there are many passers-by on the square, and people will see it without crowding," Guan said.

"Questioning themselves and today's reality, participants of the event try to create their own understanding of the 'image' of a traditional lantern," Bulgaria's National Academy of Art said on its website.

With the temporary character of this show and the aesthetic influence of light as an art form, the exhibition cultivates a new artistic vision and social activity in this public place, it said.
