Editor's note: A classic play reimagined as a Quju opera, stunning photos from National Geographic, and tales of the Silk Road told through dance: Here are three highlight events you won't want to miss this week.
1. Quju opera: "Dragon Beard Ditch"
Adapted from author Lao She's play of the same title, "Dragon Beard Ditch" is a realistic portrayal of the lives of ordinary Chinese people. Its story tells of the huge changes to the lives of Beijingers after 1949.
Quju, a local form of opera from Beijing, is based on single-string tunes with spoken parts featuring Beijing dialect. It specializes in staging stories about the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and modern Beijing.
Dates: March 16-17
Venue: National Center for the Performing Arts, Xicheng District, Beijing
2. Photo exhibition: Classic National Geographic images
A new exhibition at the China Millennium Monument features a collection of 130 memorable images of the earth and mankind from the past 130 years.
National Geographic has been dedicated to exploring our planet and everything on it since the magazine was established in 1888. It is one of the most widely read publications of all time, with breathtaking photographs and stories that reflect the broad vision of the world we live in.
Originally scheduled to open last year, the exhibition's opening was pushed back due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Dates: March 20-June 20
Venue: China Millennium Monument, Haidian District, Beijing
3. Dance drama: "The Silk Road"
The Chinese dance drama "The Silk Road" tells the important development strategy of the country's Belt and Road Initiative. The work demonstrates the economic prosperity brought about by commerce and trade, while reproducing the natural landscapes and peoples from the deserts of northwest China and water towns south of the Yangtze River.
The dance drama will show the charm of Chinese culture to domestic and foreign audiences, and spread the charm of the country's grassland culture.
Dates: March 17-18
