Created in 1958, "Liu Sanjie" is a masterpiece of Caidiao opera — a traditional form of stage art from the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. The work is based on the legendary story of Liu Sanjie, a master singer of the Zhuang ethnic group.

Following the themes of the pursuit of freedom and a happy life, the opera tells of a heroine who fights tenaciously for her freedom and dignity, using her songs as weapons. Liu is depicted as a gifted singer who is hardworking, kind-hearted, beautiful, bright, honest and spirited.

Venue: National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing

Dates: June 4-6, 2021

2. Musical dance drama — "Magical Night at the Art Museum"

The musical dance drama "Magical Night at the Art Museum," part of the long-running "Tan Yuanyuan and Her Friends" series, is set in a gallery. Artists inject new life into paintings from both East and West through the reinterpretation of dance and music and modern stage design.

The show's artistic director is Tan Yuanyuan, principal dancer of the San Francisco Ballet, and it is directed by Zhou Ke, who won the best director award at the 3rd Chinese Theatre Awards.

Venue: Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center, Beijing

3. Musical play — "Block Makes a Commotion"

The musical "Block Makes a Commotion" is based on the picture book of the same name by the Norwegian author and illustrator Ashild Kanstad Johnsen. Born into a family of artists, Johnsen is the illustrator behind several popular works, including a series of picture books centered around a wooden log called "Block," which has been a big hit in Japan and other Asian countries.
