Located on the Dapeng Peninsula on the eastern edge of Shenzhen, the LEGOLAND Shenzhen Resort will be the first international intellectual property-based theme park resort in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, covering approximately 580,000 square meters with exclusive operating rights held by Merlin Entertainments, which currently oversees nine LEGOLAND resorts worldwide. Hazens Holdings has signed on as its local partner.

"Construction of the world's largest LEGOLAND resort in Shenzhen marks a significant milestone for Merlin in China, reflecting the scale of opportunity in the country and our commitment to developing our business in China," said Nick Varney, chief executive of Merlin Entertainments, adding that the upcoming resort will be a "must-see" destination for millions of families looking to "experience the magic of LEGO" in China.

Officials from the Shenzhen municipal government and Dapeng New District government joined representatives from Merlin Entertainments, The LEGO Group and Hazens Holdings for a launch ceremony, Aug. 26, that saw the arrival of 20,000 colorful LEGO bricks to the construction site.

Speaking at the event, Siegfried Boerst, general manager of the LEGOLAND Shenzhen Resort, revealed that the new resort, while maintaining the authentic LEGOLAND experience, will boast innovative features, new themed areas, rides and immersive shows specifically designed for the China market.

The total project investment is expected to exceed 7 billion yuan ($1.08 billion) and the park is due to open in 2024. According to its press release, the resort will be the ultimate LEGO theme park and hotel destination for children aged 2-12 and their families. The experience will cater to those on multi-day vacations, offering more than nine themed areas, as well as more than 100 interactive rides, shows and attractions. The resort will also feature the world's largest LEGOLAND theatre with more than 1,000 seats, as well as the largest LEGOLAND Water Park and three LEGO-themed hotels, with over 1,000 LEGO-themed rooms.
