English book series sheds light on legacy of Chengdu culture

A new translation series on Tianfu culture was released Dec. 22 in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province in southwest China.

The translation series, "The Symphony of Poetry and Tea: Tianfu Culture in Four Seasons," was edited by The Research Institute of Tianfu Culture Center for Urban Cultural Studies and Communication of Chengdu University, and published by Chengdu Times Press. It marks another masterful piece of international communication under the guidance of the Information Office of Chengdu Municipal People's Government.

Tianfu, meaning the land of plenty, is a common name for Chengdu and its surrounding region. Beautifully illustrated and well translated, the English edition vividly depicts the rich and colorful personality, lifestyle and aesthetics of Chengdu city and Sichuan.

The book series serves as a unique cultural exchange for the 31st FISU Summer World University Games Chengdu. With the goal of sharing Chengdu's stories with a global audience, it represents a new effort in branding Tianfu culture and promoting cultural dialogues based on mutual learning between China and foreign countries.

The whole book series revolves around the most representative elements of "poetry" and "tea" in Tianfu culture and chronologically follows the four seasons to reflect the enduring vibrancy of Tianfu culture.

During the editing and compiling process, the translation and illustration teams from Chengdu University and College of Chinese and ASEAN Arts (CCAA) were mindful of English reading habits, and experts on Sichuan studies such as Tan Jihe, Shu Dagang, Peng Bangben and Wang Chuan worked as consultants. After the manuscript was translated, it was then reviewed by Professor Wang Di of the Department of History at the University of Macau. These efforts, together with the quality translations, make the book not only highly readable but also underpinned by rigorous academic research.

The release of the book series was celebrated with a launch ceremony attended by officials, experts and students from the Information Office of Chengdu Municipal People's Government, Chengdu University, Chengdu Media Group, and various consulates. The event also attracted many foreign professors and international students. One of the head creators of the book series, Tan Ping, dean of the Institute of Tianfu Culture, Chengdu University, was also at the press conference. 

The series of books were presented as a gift from Chengdu to the Organizing Committee of the 31st FISU Summer World University Games Chengdu, foreign consulates in Chengdu, Chengdu Library and Chengdu Museum.
