Editor's note: Classic Peking opera masterpieces for the New Year, a stage play adapted from a celebrated Chinese novel as well as an immersive painting theatrical show — here are three events you won't want to miss this week.

1. Classic Peking opera masterpieces for New Year

As the New Year approaches, a series of classic Peking opera masterpieces will be staged in the Chang'an Grand Theater in Beijing. The time-honored Peking opera theater is decorated with both classic and historical materials including elements from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.

Dates: Dec. 30-31

2. Drama 'The Story of Niu Tianci'

In celebration of the 123rd anniversary of the birth of well-known Chinese writer Lao She (1899-1966), the stage drama "The Story of Niu Tianci," adapted from the veteran's novel of the same name, will take center stage in Shanghai. Directed by Fang Xu, who has adapted five of Lao She's works into theatrical productions, the story follows the life and experiences of an abandoned child named Niu Tianci who was adopted by a childless couple.

Dates: Dec. 31-Jan. 1

Venue: Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Shanghai

3. Circus-sound painting show 'Plock!'

In the 4D painting space, parents and children can jointly participate in the immersive painting theatrical show "Plock!" which combines visual art skills with stunts, such as rolls, loops, splits and headstands. The creative show aims to pay homage to Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), an American painter and major figure in the abstract expressionist movement.
