The legendary Woody Allen is a towering figure for many Chinese art-house movie fans, but they could only enjoy the auteur's offerings online. Until now, that is, with the release of his 2019 romantic comedy "A Rainy Day in New York" set to hit Chinese screens this Friday.
As a director, writer, actor, and comedian, Allen's career spans more than six decades and multiple Academy Award-winning films. Despite this, only a few of his films have been screened at China's film events, such as "Midnight in Paris" and "To Rome With Love" at the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
"A Rainy Day in New York," written and directed by Allen, stars several Chinese audiences' favorite movie stars, including Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, and Jude Law. The film follows the romantic exploits of two young college students, Gatsby and Ashleigh (Chalamet and Fanning), during a weekend visit to Gatsby's hometown of New York City. The film also features several songs by jazz pianist Erroll Garner.
Prior to its arrival at the Chinese box office this weekend, the film earned approximately $22 million worldwide.
