DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures' animated film "The Bad Guys" sprinted to the top of box office in its North American debut with a three-day estimate of 24 million U.S. dollars, according to studio figures released by measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

Helmed by Pierre Perifel in his feature directorial debut, the family action-comedy stars the voices of Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos and Awkwafina, among others.

Based on the New York Times best-selling book series of the same name by Aaron Blabey, the film follows a crackerjack criminal crew of animal outlaws as they attempt their most challenging con yet - becoming model citizens.

The film holds an approval rating of 85 percent based on 124 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Movie audiences gave it an "A" on CinemaScore, a market research firm that surveys film audiences to rate their viewing experiences.

Overseas, "The Bad Guys" has grossed 63.11 million dollars, bringing its global tally to 87.11 million dollars. The film is set to be released in China later this month.

Paramount Pictures' family-friendly film "Sonic The Hedgehog 2" came in second with 15.22 million dollars.

Rounding out the top three, Warner Bros. Pictures' fantasy film "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" took in 14 million dollars this weekend, pushing its North American total to 67.12 million dollars.
