The construction of the Sub-center Theatre in Beijing's Tongzhou district is advancing steadily as scheduled.

Dubbed a "cultural granary," the Sub-center Theatre mimics the shape of ancient barns and boats and meets the standards of the world's first-class theaters. Covering 120,000 square meters, the theater comprises 1,800 opera houses, 1,550 concert halls, 1,000 theaters, 500 small theaters, 650 open-air theaters, and public service rooms such as rehearsal rooms, multi-functional halls, and art exhibition halls.

The venue is able to host activities such as performances, artistic creation, and cultural education. In the future, it will present a series of artworks to promote Chinese culture as well as classical works from around the world.

According to Xu Qi, deputy leader of the preparatory team for the Sub-center Theatre Construction Project, the secondary structure of the city's sub-center theater was completed by the end of 2021 and is expected to be ready for opening by the end of 2023.

Xu said that the sub-center theater would stick to its innovative and differentiated operation positioning and pay more attention to the needs of young people.

"The theater will serve as an important cultural establishment for the coordinated development of the Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei region," Xu said.

The open-air theaters are a special feature of the sub-center theater. As open-air music festivals are gaining popularity among young people, the sub-center theater plans to make breakthroughs in the future regarding these events.

With the continuous advancement of the theater's construction, more creative ideas will surely be discovered, and an innovative theater management model will better reflect the culmination of these artistic practices.
