The first Beijing Theater Carnival raised its curtain on Thursday in the city's eastern Chaoyang district. The event will stage a selection of art performances to help people relax in the hot summer.

The carnival, organized by and hosted in the 751 D-Park that is renovated from a gas plant, will present a series of plays and activities, including dramas, talk shows, stand up comedies, musicals, outdoor movies, and art fairs.

As the host of the Han culture festival and international design week, the 751 D-Park will introduce theaters and plays this year, in the hope of presenting an inclusive and one-of-a-kind experience for theater-goers and visitors alike, said Yan Mingdan, vice general manager of the 751 D-Park.

The carnival gives people a rare chance of seeing some of the best-reviewed dramas and plays, said Meng Danfeng, artistic adviser to the theater carnival.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a serious blow to the show business with many of the theaters being closed and art performances canceled, Meng said. She said she hopes the carnival will break the deadlock and present the variety and vitality of the theater art to the audience.
