The 12th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) kicks off in the Chinese capital on Saturday.

About 200 celebrities and movie-industry professionals made glamorous appearances on the red carpet before the opening ceremony near the scenic Yanqi Lake.

As one of the highlights of the BJIFF, a total of 1,450 movies, including 1,193 titles from 88 foreign countries, have applied to compete for its Tiantan Award this year.

Sixteen films were finally shortlisted for the award race.

The line-up of Chinese and foreign headline filmmakers serving as the Tiantan Award jury made an appearance during the opening ceremony.

Apart from the Tiantan Award, the film festival also features "Beijing Film Panorama" screenings of over 130 classic films in the city, themed forums and a two-week "Online BJIFF" event.

The annual festival will last till Aug. 20.
