After receiving critical acclaim at the Beijing International Film Festival, a Hong Kong romantic comedy starring top local stand-up comedian Dayo Wong will hit mainland theaters in September.
"Table for Six," directed by Sunny Chan and starring Wong, Stephy Tang, Louis Cheung, Peter Chan, and Ivana Wong, follows three half-siblings who meet up at a family reunion. The siblings are shocked to discover that the eldest brother's ex-girlfriend is now dating the middle brother. Worse still, the siblings uncover plenty more secrets throughout the reunion, and comedic disaster ensures.
Chen Shiya, the chief executive editor of World Screen magazine and a film critic, was among the first to see it during the Beijing film fest. "This is the pleasant surprise of the year," he said, describing it as both hilarious and exquisite.
Bill Kong, one of the most renowned Hong Kong-based film producers who created "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Hero," and "Monster Hunt," served as the executive producer of the film and spoke with the audience via video link after a screening on Aug. 19. He said he was "very surprised" when he first read the script and was impressed by the unconventional director. He revealed that the comedian Dayo Wong felt the same and immediately asked to join the cast after he finished reading the script.
"We had many great romantic comedies before, which gave birth to many great comedians. But we don't do many such films now, and it has been a long time for such a comedy to enter the mainland market," Kong said.
In addition, the Chinese title of the film directly uses the title of a classic Cantonese song by Jacky Cheung - "Still Think You Are the Best," which triggered nostalgia among audiences. The film will be released nationwide on Sept. 9, with limited advanced screenings on Aug. 27 and Aug. 28.
