The Shanghai Grand Theater had in 2018 made a deal with the culture and tourism administration of Yangpu district to take over the reconstruction project Yangpu Grand Theater, which was built in 1996.
The revamped venue has a main theater area equipped with 1,020 seats and the latest visual and audio systems. There is also a 168-seater experimental theater that will be used for art education, workshops and the incubation of new theater productions, according to Professor Xu Feng of Tongji University, the architect of the reconstruction project.
According to Zhang Xiaoding, general manager of SGT, which is also responsible for the management of Theater Young, drama creations, especially those by university-based theater companies, will be a major highlight in the new theater as it is located near some of the most esteemed universities in Shanghai.
