The film of Sony's TriStar Pictures "The Woman King" dominated the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 19 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

"The Woman King" tells the story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starring Oscar winner Viola Davis, the film follows the journey of General Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.

The well-reviewed film holds an approval rating of 94 percent based on 125 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned a coveted "A+" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

Disney's presentation of 20th Century Studios and New Regency's horror film "Barbarian" came in second with 6.3 million dollars on its second weekend, taking its North American total to 20.9 million dollars through Sunday.

Rounding out the top three, A24's horror film "Pearl" opened with 3.12 million dollars this weekend.
