'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' tops North American box office on opening weekend

Paramount Pictures and Entertainment One's fantasy film "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 38.5 million U.S. dollars, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

Based on the popular fantasy role-playing game "Dungeons & Dragons," the film follows a charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers who undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic.

Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege-Jean Page and Justice Smith, among others.

The film holds a positive approval rating of 90 percent based on 219 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned an "A-" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

Internationally, the film took in 33 million dollars, including over 5 million dollars from Chinese mainland, bringing its global cume to 71.5 million dollars through Sunday.
