Based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy, the film is the final installment in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" film trilogy. James Gunn writes and directs "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff.

The film currently holds a positive approval rating of 81 percent based on 286 reviews on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore gave it an "A" grade on an "A+" to "F" scale.

On the international front, the film garnered $168.1 million, with the Chinese mainland contributing 192 million yuan ($28 million), resulting in a global total of $282.1 million. It made a remarkable debut at the global IMAX box office, generating $25 million and marking the biggest opening within the trilogy. The film premiered on 1,550 IMAX systems across 82 countries and territories worldwide.

IMAX China also had an impressive debut for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" in China, with a staggering $5.6 million in box office earnings over the weekend. This accounted for an outstanding 20% of the film's total opening weekend box office. Notably, the final installment of the trilogy achieved the highest market share for IMAX and the second biggest IMAX opening weekend for the franchise in China.

The film received widespread acclaim on major movie rating platforms in China. On the opening day, it achieved remarkable ratings, including a stellar 9.5 on Maoyan, 9.4 on Taopiaopiao, and 8.7 on Douban. The film's rating on Douban stands as the highest among all Marvel films. Despite it being a working day on Saturday due to the May Day holiday shift, audiences enthusiastically flocked to IMAX theaters in China over the weekend to bid farewell to the beloved "Galaxy Squad."

"Our record-breaking box office momentum in 2023 is carrying into a summer blockbuster season loaded with ambitious, IMAX-friendly cinematic experiences -- yet another great sign for our performance this year," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "James Gunn and our partners at Marvel and Disney leaned heavily into IMAX technology to deliver a visually stunning and emotional finale to this iconic franchise and we expect the strong audience response to yield a long, successful run at the box office."
