Sony Pictures' horror film "Insidious: The Red Door" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 32.65 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
The film, directed by and starring Patrick Wilson, is the fifth installment in the Insidious franchise. The horror franchise's original cast returns for the final chapter of the Lambert family's terrifying saga.
"Insidious: The Red Door" only holds an approval rating of 36 percent based on 59 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned a mediocre "C+" on the scale of "A+" to "F" from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.
Disney and Lucasfilm's action-adventure film "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" dropped to the second place on its second weekend with 26.5 million dollars. The film has grossed 121.2 million dollars so far in North America.
Another newcomer, Angel Studios' action film "Sound of Freedom," based on true events that sheds light on the darkness of child trafficking, finished third with 18.2 million dollars.
