A record high of 7,216 foreign films have applied for participation in the 40th Tehran International Short Film Festival (TISFF) in October, the fest's secretary Mehdi Azarpendar said Monday.

Azarpendar, also the managing director of the Iranian Youth Cinema Society, made the remarks at a press conference in the Iranian capital Tehran on this year's festival, which is scheduled for Oct. 19-24, according to the TISFF's website.

As many as 7,216 films representing 131 countries would take part in the festival's international section, 800 more than the best record set in the 38th festival, he said, adding that Spain, India, France and the United States are the countries with the most entries.

Two new sections, namely "Truth Seekers" and "Silk Road," are set for this year's foreign films in competition. The former would be awarded to films that seek to reflect truths, and the latter to those reflecting the neighborly spirit among countries along the ancient trade routes, he said.

The number of films submitted for the national section is 1,787, comprising 1,185 fictions, 267 documentaries, 222 experimental movies and 113 animated films, Azarpendar said.

He noted that TISFF is a qualifying festival for the Academy Awards, meaning the top winner can be eligible for Oscar nominations.
