Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema's horror thriller "The Nun II" topped the North American box office for the third weekend in a row with an estimated 8.4 million U.S. dollars, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
The film has earned 69.2 million dollars so far in North America for a worldwide total of 204.2 million dollars.
The film is a sequel to 2018's "The Nun," the highest grossing entry in the "The Conjuring" Universe. "The Conjuring" Universe, centered on a series of supernatural horror films, is the highest grossing horror franchise in history with over 2 billion dollars worldwide.
Directed by Michael Chaves, "The Nun II" stars Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet and Bonnie Aarons, returning from the first film.
Lionsgate's action film "Expend4bles," starring Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, opened in second place with 8.3 million dollars this weekend.
In third place, 20th Century Studios' murder mystery film "A Haunting In Venice" generated 6.3 million dollars on its second weekend for a North American cume of 25.3 million dollars.
