Paramount's animated family film "PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie" debuted atop the North American box office over the weekend with an estimated cume of 23 million U.S. dollars, showed figures from data firm Comscore on Sunday.
Based on the television series PAW Patrol, the film is a sequel to the first "PAW Patrol" movie released in 2021, which grossed over 144 million dollars worldwide.
Directed by Cal Brunker, "PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie" boasts the voices of Kristen Bell, Taraji P. Henson, James Marsden and Kim Kardashian. In the film, the PAW Patrol pups gain superpowers and must stop the supervillains from wreaking havoc in Adventure City.
The film received an approval rating of 82 percent to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned a glowing "A" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.
Meanwhile, the film took in 23.1 million dollars overseas, contributing to a global opening weekend estimate of 46.1 million dollars.
Another newcomer, Lionsgate's horror sequel "Saw X," came in second this weekend with 18 million dollars.
In third place, 20th Century Studios' science fiction film "The Creator" opened with 14 million dollars.
