The Conference on World Sinology and China Studies opened on Oct. 21 in Qingdao, Shandong province, aimed at promoting innovative and high-quality development of Sinology and China studies in the new era.

The conference is being convened against the backdrop of the third Dialogue on Exchanges and Mutual Learning Among Civilizations and the first World Conference of Sinologists held in July. As a comprehensive public academic exchange platform, the conference has attracted more than 300 experts and scholars from over 130 higher learning and research institutions nationwide to pool wisdom on how to advance international efforts for the development of Sinology.

Zhang Xiping, a distinguished professor at Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) and editor-in-chief of International Sinology, underscored that Chinese culture is at a historic moment of reconstruction, and the study of Sinology shoulders the important academic mission of contributing to the spread and understanding of Chinese culture around the world.

Huang Zhuoyue, a professor at BLCU and director of the Chinese Culture Translation and Communication Research Center, explored the topic of how to adapt Sinology to the post-globalization era by identifying new development and research orientations, so as to promote dialogue and exchanges among different civilizations.

Roger T. Ames, humanities chair professor at Peking University, highlighted the international influence of the fine traditional Chinese culture, especially the importance of kinship emphasized in Confucianism for the establishment of a new geopolitical order. The kinship presented by Confucianism advocates interpersonal relationships of harmony, mutual respect and mutual love, which can be applied to international relations to help build a more stable, harmonious and prosperous world, Ames added.

A total of 15 sub-forums will be held during the three-day conference, shedding light on topics including the translation of Chinese classics, spread and communication of Chinese culture, and discipline development and talent training in Sinology around the world.

The conference is being co-hosted by the Chinese Association for International Understanding, the Belt and Road Academy of BLCU, the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University, and the Institute of International Communication on Chinese Culture at Beijing Foreign Studies University.
