The Beijing Performing Arts Centre in the city's sub-center staged a concert on Monday promoting the culture of the Grand Canal through music.

As China's first national orchestral work themed on the Grand Canal, the concert integrated various kinds of music, including Chinese folk music performed with traditional percussion instruments, opera, pop music and experimental music, to display the rich history and culture of the ancient waterway. It is produced by Beijing Performance and Arts Group and created by the Beijing Chinese Orchestra.

Around 100 performers from Chinese orchestras of eight provinces and cities along the Grand Canal participated in the performance. "Through diverse ethnic music styles of different regions, the work depicts the profound culture of the Grand Canal, allowing more people to appreciate the charm of the Grand Canal," said Dong Ning, deputy general manager of Beijing Performance and Arts Group.

The concert is one of 11 activities taking place during the 2023 China Grand Canal Cultural Belt Beijing-Hangzhou Dialogue. Hosted by the Information Office of Beijing Municipal People's Government, the Information Office of Zhejiang Provincial People's Government, Hangzhou Municipal People's Government, and the World Historic and Cultural Canal Cities Cooperation Organization, the dialogue aims to engage cities along the canal in promoting the culture of the Grand Canal, as well as boosting the influence of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt.
