Illumination, founded by Chris Meledandri in 2007, is the creator of this year's record-shattering "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," as well as the blockbuster franchises "Minions," "Despicable Me," and "Sing." Its esteemed studio library boasts three of the top 10 animated films of all time. The studio sets off on a new adventure with the action-packed original animated comedy "Migration." This humorous, heartfelt, and visually captivating film explores universal themes of family, curiosity and the rewards of venturing beyond one's comfort zone.

Directed by Benjamin Renner, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker, and Illumination veteran Guylo Homsy, "Migration" offers a visual feast with its elevated, expressionist artistry, combined with Illumination's unique blend of subversive humor and genuine warmth. It tells the story of the Mallard family, who, stuck in a rut, embark on a family trip to Jamaica after being inspired by a migrating duck family. Although their plans unravel, the experience fosters growth, new friendships, and achievements beyond their expectations, while also deepening their understanding of each other and themselves.

From a screenplay by Mike White, the Emmy-winning creator of "The White Lotus" and the screenwriter of "School of Rock," the film boasts a top-flight comedic cast featuring Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Caspar Jennings, Tresi Gazal, Awkwafina, Carol Kane, Keegan-Michael Key and Danny DeVito.

"At Illumination, we're fortunate to be the stewards of a number of franchises, but we also believe that we have a mission to bring new stories and new characters to the world," stated Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination. "The making of 'Migration' has been a great adventure. Each time we create a new story, we start in different places. Since I was a child, I've always found ducks incredibly appealing because they're so silly and likable. But what really gives this movie its universality is that the film touches on issues that are very human, relevant issues."

Mack, the father duck played by Kumail Nanjiani, worries about the dangers of the outside world, while mom Pam, played by Elizabeth Banks, wants their family, especially their children, to explore the wonders beyond their protected bubble. Director Renner explained, "This movie strives to establish a strong connection with audiences by expressing the reward of embracing new experiences and the wonderful moments and relationships that can emerge along the way. In exploring the theme of coming out of one's comfort zone, it reminded me of my own love of hiking and traveling. I've had experiences where I didn't want to go, but someone encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, and every time I did, I had a magnificent and great experience. I wanted to share that feeling with the audience, that sense of reward when you have an adventure."

Working on a new, original Illumination film also provided the filmmakers with expansive creative freedom. "It was reminiscent of my early days working on 'Despicable Me,'" co-director Homsy said. "We had the freedom to create a unique world and find the right tone for the movie. It's also a more intimate and deeply thematic movie than I've done before. Working with Benjamin was a delight. We shared a similar vision, and were both motivated to make something different and combine epic and poetic elements. He trusted me throughout the process and it was a fantastic experience."

As "Migration" takes flight in theaters this holiday season, the filmmakers hope it inspires audiences to stretch their own wings and soar to unexpected destinations in their own lives. "I hope that resonates with people," Renner said. "I hope this film encourages them to embrace the wonder that awaits beyond the horizon."

The film received a passionate and positive reception from audiences during its premiere events in Shanghai on Nov. 27 and Beijing on Nov. 29. Chinese celebrities, including Lu Yi, Bao Lei, Cai Guoqing, and Huo Siyan and her son, attended the screenings, giving their enthusiastic approval.

Following the screening, renowned singer Cai Guoqiang shared his insightful perspective on life, reflecting on themes evident in the film: "Life should be filled with happiness. The more pressure, setbacks, or moments of feeling stuck we encounter, the wiser we become. By changing our perspective, we can still soar high and find inner joy despite life's challenges. We should not let age define our lives. Instead, we should take charge and become masters of our own destinies."
