China's popular cross-talk comedian and Peking Opera performer Guo Degang announced this week that he will head an art research commission dedicated to the promotion of the Qi School of Peking Opera.

Guo and his fellow opera artists came together on Wednesday to announce the launch of the Art Research Professional Commission for the Qi School of Peking Opera under the Beijing National Essence Arts Inheritance Promotion Association, with aims to revitalize the traditional art style of the Qi School and promote its development.

The Qi School is a prominent school in Peking Opera, founded by master Zhou Xinfang, also known by his stage name Qilin Tong. The artists of this school, mainly hailing from southern China, specialize in portraying more elderly roles. Zhou is a towering figure in the Peking Opera realm, alongside Mei Lanfang and other esteemed masters.

Guo, an established comedian, also has performance roots in Peking Opera and later even became a protege of Zhao Lintong, a master of the Qi School. 

The artist said at the press conference that he hopes to celebrate and pass on this artistic style to future generations. Therefore, he initiated the commission as chairman. However, he humbly stated that he is merely an organizer, aiming to bring together resources and support this Chinese traditional art.

According to the press release, the Art Research Professional Commission for the Qi School of Peking Opera is a dedicated platform aimed at promoting and advancing the art of the Qi School. It not only invites seasoned artists from the Qi School to participate but also looks to bring together experts from various genres and fields of art research. By uniting talents from diverse backgrounds, the commission is committed to fostering the development, preservation, and propagation of the essence of Qi School culture.

The commission is responsible for reintroducing these precious artistic works to audiences. Their mission includes exploring and maintaining the classical repertoire of the Qi School, which encompasses the works mastered by veteran artists like Chen Shaoyun and over 1,000 performances by art masters like Zhou Xinfang. These valuable works will be revitalized via new interpretations. Additionally, the commission prioritizes nurturing the younger generation through shows, artistic exchanges, and other activities, encouraging young artists to innovate while respecting traditions and providing them with abundant opportunities to showcase their talents.

"We will provide financial support and human resources for any stage show you wish to perform, young Qi School masters!" Guo promised.

"The number of inheritors of the Qi School is not plentiful at present, and this is a concern for us. I hope that this commission can undertake more practical and substantial work to revitalize this art form," added artist Chen Shaoyun.

A classic Peking Opera show, "Silang Visits His Mother," featuring numerous Qi School performers, including Guo Degang, Chen Shaoyun, Pei Yongjie, and Tao Yang, will be staged at the Chang'an Grand Theater in Beijing on Friday. The show also includes renowned Peking Opera artists, such as Li Li and Zhao Xiujun, from other opera schools but who collaborate with Qi School artists. The show sold out in minutes.
