"I believe the Inspiring Series presents an innovative approach to showcase China to the world", David Gosset, editor of the Inspiring Series.

Question : The recently published book, Inspiring Shanxi, is the latest addition to the Inspiring Series. Could you provide an overview of what you refer to as the Inspiring Series?

David Gosset, editor of the Inspiring Series: I am delighted to discuss the Inspiring Series and the decision to spotlight Shanxi this year. The Inspiring Series aims to exhibit the diverse and culturally rich tapestry of China, unraveling the nuances that render each province unique.

China's extensive and varied landscape hosts a myriad of cultural subtleties, and my travels in the country since the 90s have afforded me the privilege of firsthand experience and appreciation for these nuances.

Through this series, I aspire to share my passion for the depth of the Chinese civilization with a wider audience. I believe the Inspiring Series presents an innovative approach to showcase China to the world.

Question : The inaugural book in the Inspiring Series was Inspiring Tianjin. Why did you opt to focus on Shanxi in 2023?

The decision to feature Shanxi in a book was driven by a desire to draw attention to a fascinating province that might not be as widely recognized, particularly outside of China. While Shanxi might not occupy a prominent position in global conversations compared to some other provinces, its cultural heritage is both rich and steeped in history. From its ancient architecture and traditional craftsmanship to its distinctive cuisine and vibrant local traditions, Shanxi offers a wealth of cultural treasures.

As a French citizen, another factor influenced my choice. 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of President Pompidou's visit to the breathtaking Yungang Grottoes, accompanied by Premier Zhou Enlai. This significant historical event underscores the strong diplomatic and cultural ties between China and France. It symbolizes the friendship between the two countries as they approach the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations (1964-2024).

In connection with this historic visit, it was a great honor for me to receive the support of Madam Zhou Bingde, the niece of Premier Zhou Enlai, who has graciously agreed to write a preface for our book Inspiring Shanxi.

In essence, the Inspiring Series seeks to celebrate China's gems, with Shanxi serving as a compelling example of the profound cultural wealth found in every corner of this vast and diverse country.

What goals do you hope to achieve with the book on Shanxi?

Obviously, an important objective is to produce knowledge on Shanxi. Besides, I would be thrilled to witness an increase in visitors exploring the province, particularly from foreign countries. As a passionate traveler myself, I believe China is a paradise for explorers. With next year designated as the year of China-France cultural tourism, I hope it provides an opportunity for the French to delve into the depths of Chinese civilization. I encourage foreign visitors to include Shanxi in their itineraries. The 22 essays of Inspiring Shanxi could serve as a travel guide!

Can you briefly present the content of Inspiring Shanxi? Why are your books available in three languages—Chinese, English, and French?

Inspiring Shanxi is divided into four parts. In the first part, the Yellow River and the Loess, we look at the province’s general context. The second chapter examines the province from the perspective of architecture, craftsmanship, and lifestyle. The third segment discusses Shanxi’s economy. The book ends with six essays in a fourth chapter dedicated to culture and art.

Our book is a collection of 22 essays written by Chinese experts, and foreign personalities. It was a real pleasure to collaborate, for example, with Spanish sinologist Belén Cuadra-Mora, and David S. G. Goodman from the University of Sydney. David S. G. Goodman visited Shanxi for the first time in 1987. In fact, I like each essay since it carries with it a new perspective.

Our volumes are multilingual with the juxtaposition of Chinese, English, and French. Cross-cultural communication can not be separated from multilingualism. Chinese, as we are discussing China. English, as it enables foreign friends across the world to access the content we create. French, because it is my mother tongue!

What is the next volume in the series? Do you plan to continue the Inspiring Series?

Our next volume will present another fascinating part of China: Inspiring Shanghai. China comprises 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities, and 2 special administrative regions. I will do my best, as long as I have the strength, to cover the many nuances and subtleties that make China. The Chinese civilization has given me a lot, and by sharing my passion for China with others is a way for me to give back, even if I am aware of all the limitations of my work.
