Sony Pictures' supernatural comedy film "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" led ticket sales at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 45.2 million U.S. dollars on its opening week, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

The film is a sequel to 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and the fifth title in the popular supernatural franchise. When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age in the latest chapter.

Directed by Gil Kenan, the film stars Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd reprising their roles from "Ghostbusters: Afterlife."

The film has received an approval rating of 43 percent based on 216 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned a "B+" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

Warner Bros. and Legendary's epic science fiction film "Dune: Part Two" came in second on its fourth weekend with 17.6 million dollars for a North American cume of 233 million dollars. The film, directed by Denis Villeneuve, has grossed 574 million dollars worldwide, including over 44 million dollars in China.

Rounding out the top three, Universal and DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda 4" brought in 16.8 million dollars on its third weekend for a North American total of 133 million dollars.
