T

TCM

Abbreviation for Traditional Chinese Medicine. While Western medicine forms an important role in China's healthcare, most people opt for TCM treatment such as herbal medicine, acupuncture and massage therapy.

Time Zone

GMT+8 (standard Time), noon in Beijing=4pm in London (same day) and 11pm in New York (day before). Beijing Time is universal throughout China.

Tipping

Generally, tipping is not necessary, but upmarket restaurants (e.g. in hotels) may add a 10-15% services fee. Tour guides and bellhops also expect a tip.

Traffic

Beijing's streets were home to 5.01 million private cars by 2011. With approximately 1,000 new motor vehicles a day squeezing onto the streets, traffic jams are a fact of life! Avoid traveling in the city during rush hours between 7am-9am, 5pm-7pm. Friday evenings are particularly hellish.
