Richard Nixon's grandson has retraced the former U.S. President's historic 1972 trip to China by taking an entourage to the Great Wall.

Christopher Nixon Cox, son of the 37th US President's daughter, Tricia Nixon said he's optimistic about China's future.

"He was always a believer that as the economy grows, as the middle class grows, the political reform would catch up. And I think that if you look at the pace of China's development in the last 40 years, you can be optimistic that a new generation will institute the political reforms that they see necessary to create a true civil society."

A 45-person delegation led by Cox and including relatives and former White House officials are commemorating Nixon's birth centennial in China.

The delegation was received by State Councillor Yang Jiechi on Friday.

Nixon's visit in 1972 broke the deadlock between Washington and Beijing during the Cold War and cleared the way for the establishment of formal ties between the US and China.
