For renowned Chinese actor Pu Cunxin, public service means doing something for those in need of help.

Pu, a household name in China, has dedicated himself to public service for more than ten years.

Pu was appointed as the first ever goodwill ambassador in the national campaign against HIV/AIDS by the Ministry of Health in 2000.

Many people find it hard to connect a famous actor with a lethal disease, but for Pu, it's just an unshirkable duty that he needs to fulfill. "It's the public's pregudice against those living with AIDS that makes me feel I should do something for them," Pu said.

Over the past 14 years, Pu has taken great pains to spread knowledge about HIV/AIDS and call for an end to discrimination against HIV carriers.

He would shake hands with the AIDS patients, chat with them, make dumplings with them and eat with them.

"It's not easy to communicate with the AIDS patients," Pu recalled. "Some patients won't open up until they see you really want to do something for them."

Apart from helping the vulnerable, Pu is also involved in other charity causes. He has helped kidnapped children, protected porpoises without fins and is arousing public awareness of energy conservation.

"I think that if something is right, then I should just do it," Pu asserted, "Never care about what others might say."
