According to experts, Chongli has abundant, high-quality snow and a long snow season.

If Beijing succeeds in its bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, Chongli, a county under the administration of Zhangjiakou City, will host most of the Games'snow sports. Experts in sports and winter recreation all shared their confidence in snow conditions of Chongli.

"Abundant, high-quality snow and a long snow season" was a conclusion shared by all experts. Among them is Wei Qinghua, who has participated in the design and operation of dozens of ski resorts in the past 23 years. He said the first-hand data he obtained in recent years could "fully support" his confidence in Chongli.

According to him, Chongli sits in a special geographic region where cold fronts from northwest clash with warm currents from the southeast, causing abundant precipitation in the winter. In describing Chongli’s winters, Wei said, "Light snow every three days, medium snow every 10 days, and heavy snow every 20 days."

In extreme cases when the amount of natural snow fails to meet the standard for Winter Olympics, Wei said all the ski resorts at Chongli are equipped with snow makers to generate enough snow. In fact, he and other experts agreed that the dry and cold climate in Zhangjiakou is ideal for man-made snow.

Song Zhiyong, the vice manager of the Genting Resort and headmaster of a ski school at Chongli, said investors started showing interest in Chongli as early as 1996,- because Chongli was an ideal place for snow sports with "a ski season of up to 150 days each year."

Data shows that Chongli usually has its first snow in late September each year. Locals say that they put on cotton-padded overcoats in October, and that ski resorts open as early as November. Song noted that 500-600 South Korean and Japanese athletes also come here for training each winter.
