Although he was faced with a seemingly unattainable challenge for lagging Chinese technologies and the inability to import technologies or engineering skills to China because of foreign blockade, Gao Heping did not give up. Instead he faced these difficulties head-on and was able to overcome them.

He was able to successfully raise the average rate of limit tests for high-powered lasers beyond the 96% average seen in developed countries to 99.9%. His achievement made foreign experts who belittled “Made in China” products eat their words, and developed countries even began to worry that they might lag further behind in this technology.

Merely a secondary school graduate, Gao is very accomplished. He is winner of the Chinese Skilled Workers Award and a model worker in the mechanical industry. As a Beijing native, he resolutely turned down a tempting offer which would have given him US$1 million and gotten U.S. green cards for his whole family.

With a 40-year-long professional career as a technician who ever seeks perfection, Gao demonstrates how an ordinary technician can become an industry-leading national-level master technician who owns the “Gao Heping National-level Master Technician Studio” and the “Beijing Chief Technician Studio.”
