I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of eight and often at night I felt my mother’s fingers by my nose to check whether I was still breathing. My conditions deteriorated swiftly and I soon received a notice that I was critically ill. Realizing that my life might soon end, I wrote to CCTV’s Road to Stardom program, in the hope that it would be able to help me fulfill my last wish: to donate my body to people in need.

After he watched the program containing my story, Wang Mingxiao, president of China Meitan General Hospital, decided to try his best to save my life.

Expert consultations led to the conclusion that my conditions had reached an advanced stage and the cancer cells have spread to both my lungs, the lymph gland, and my bones. After she heard that I might die on the operating table, my mother said to the doctors: “Go ahead. I entrust my child to you.”

The doctors removed ten tumors from my neck, the biggest of which was larger than a fist. After six and a half hours, the operation was declared a success. When I opened my eyes, I smiled and even my tears tasted sweet to me at the moment. I unexpectedly regained my health after living with the cancer for 18 years.

I returned to China Meitan General Hospital in 2012, but this time as a nurse who takes care of others instead of a patient requiring care.
